Montréal, December 14th, 2022 – Drugs: Help and Referral (DHR) would like to thank the Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund for allocating 20 000 dollars towards a project aiming at the care of people with a comorbidity of addiction and mental health.
In recent years, especially since the pandemic, counselors at Drugs: Help and Referral have noticed an increase in requests for help from people with a mental health disorder and addiction problem. These calls are longer, filled with distress and numerous crises. That is why DHR wishes to better respond to these requests, to provide suitable counseling and to direct people towards services that can help them with both their mental health and their addiction.
The three components of the project are:
Refresher training for the Drugs: Help and Referral counselors in crisis intervention for people with a mental health disorder as well as an addiction. Many subjects such as grief, suicide, etc., will be explored.
Updating and growing our provincial database of services for mental health that we can refer to people that contact DHR and that have both a mental health disorder and an addiction.
Implementing communication actions, particularly the creation of tools that will better explain the relationship between mental health and addiction and its consequences, as well as meeting workers in the mental health field to encourage greater collaboration between various services and expertise sharing which will improve the care of people with a comorbidity of addiction and mental health.
Under the conditions of the Fund, all three components of this project must be carried out within the next twelve months.
